Becoming A Minimalist

I never thought I would consider moving from a three-bedroom house with walk-in closets and a two-car garage to a one-bedroom, 1.5 bath condo but I am so glad I did.  This is my new view from my living room.

In the past few years, my husband and I lost our parents.  The painful task of sorting through your parent’s possessions really makes you evaluate how much stuff you own.

My house was full of fabric I had collected over the past 40+ years as well as five sewing machines and who knows how many dolls.  I also had shelves of books and cabinets full of dishes I no longer used.

I was like the children of Israel described in the Bible “For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.”  Exodus 36:7 King James Version.

Sewing and Office

Sewing and Office from Ikea

One of the first things we did, was to make the dining room space into an office/sewing area.  We drove to the nearest Ikea (about 2.5 hours away in Tampa) and purchased shelving and desks.

The cost of this setup was about $1000 but it’s very functional.  The fabric inserts were purchased at Wal-Mart.  They will hold as much fabric and supplies as an under-the-bed plastic storage container.

It’s still a work in progress but I am happy with the results so far.  (Glad I got my husband that new cordless drill with attachments for Christmas)

We recently had one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen!

Looking forward to more dolly fun!  Stay tuned……
